How we collect this data
AltorLab crawls 15-20 SMB websites per city and vertical each week. Current crawl coverage includes dental practices and law firms in Phoenix, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Austin, Chicago, and Seattle. We check six GEO signals: FAQPage schema, AI crawler access, LocalBusiness schema, author credentials, directory presence, and sameAs entity links. Each site receives a GEO Health Score from 0 to 100. Data tagged [AltorLab] reflects our crawl findings. Data from other sources is linked and attributed.
What These Numbers Mean for Your Business
How to read this data and what it means in practice
The 41/100 average GEO Health Score tells you most US businesses are not optimized for AI search. That is an opportunity. When your competitors score 35–45 and you score 75, AI systems consistently recommend you over them. The gap between being cited and being invisible is usually three to five technical fixes, not a months-long content overhaul.
FAQPage schema is the clearest example. It takes a developer two hours to implement on an existing website. Yet fewer than 25% of dental practices have it. Pages with FAQPage schema are cited 52% more often by AI systems than equivalent pages without it, according to Magna's 2026 research. That is a measurable competitive advantage that most practices are leaving on the table.
This methodology scales across verticals and geographies. KundliMilan, a consumer marriage-compatibility platform targeting Indian audiences, deployed structured data and answer-first content across 782 pages and now generates consistent AI citations for high-intent queries — the same result dental and legal practices see for their local markets.
The AI crawler blocking problem is even more fixable. Between 40% and 50% of US SMBs are blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot in their robots.txt - usually because of a broad Disallow rule added years ago to prevent scraping. A three-line addition to robots.txt opens your site to AI indexing without exposing anything sensitive. Use our free robots.txt AI checker to see if your site has this problem.

The Six GEO Signals We Measure
Every site in our crawl is scored on these six factors
| Signal | Weight | What It Means | % of SMBs Passing |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAQPage schema | High | Structured Q&A that AI systems can extract directly | ~22% |
| AI crawler access | High | GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot allowed in robots.txt | ~55% |
| LocalBusiness schema | Medium | Name, address, phone, hours in structured format | ~48% |
| Author credentials (E-E-A-T) | Medium | Named authors with credentials on key content pages | ~31% |
| Directory presence | Medium | Active profiles on Healthgrades, Avvo, Yelp, G2, etc. | ~67% |
| sameAs entity links | Lower | Schema linking to authoritative third-party profiles | ~18% |
How to Improve Your GEO Health Score
The fastest path from a low GEO score to a high one is to fix the high-weight signals first. For most US SMBs, that means three things in this order:
- Fix robots.txt: Add explicit Allow rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot. Takes 10 minutes. Use the free robots.txt checker to confirm the change worked.
- Add FAQPage schema: Pick your five highest-traffic service or category pages. Add a Q&A block with three to five direct answers per page. Add FAQPage JSON-LD. Use the free FAQPage schema generator to build the code.
- Complete your LocalBusiness schema: Make sure name, address, phone, hours, and service area match exactly what's in Google Business Profile. AI systems cross-reference these. Use our dental or legal schema templates as a starting point.
After those three fixes, most businesses move from the 35–45 range to 65–75. The remaining gains come from content depth, author credentials, and sustained link acquisition - work that takes longer but compounds over time. Our full GEO optimization guide covers the complete playbook.
We'll run a live crawl, show you your score vs competitors in your city, and walk you through the three highest-impact fixes. Free 15-minute call. No pitch.

What percentage of US dental practices have FAQPage schema?
Fewer than 25% of US dental practices have FAQPage schema implemented, based on AltorLab's ongoing crawl data across Phoenix, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, and four other US cities. FAQPage schema is the single highest-impact GEO signal - pages with it are cited 52% more often by AI systems than pages without it.
What is the average GEO Health Score for US SMBs?
The average GEO Health Score across AltorLab's crawls is 41 out of 100. The most common gaps are missing FAQPage schema, AI crawlers blocked in robots.txt, and incomplete directory profiles. Dental practices average 38/100. Law firms average 43/100.
How many websites accidentally block AI crawlers like GPTBot?
Between 40% and 50% of US SMB websites AltorLab has crawled had at least one AI crawler blocked in robots.txt. Nearly 21% of the top 1,000 US websites block GPTBot specifically, according to GeoAlliance research. The most common cause is a broad Disallow: / rule added years ago to prevent content scraping.
How do I check if my website blocks AI crawlers?
Use AltorLab's free robots.txt AI checker. Enter your domain and it will scan your robots.txt for rules that block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and other AI search crawlers. The fix takes 10 minutes once you know what to look for.
What is a good GEO Health Score?
Scores above 70 are strong. Scores of 50–70 are average with clear improvement opportunities. Scores below 50 have significant gaps - usually missing FAQPage schema, blocked AI crawlers, or incomplete structured data. Our GEO readiness checklist helps you identify which gaps matter most for your specific situation.
How does GEO optimization differ from SEO?
Traditional SEO optimizes for ranked results in Google's blue links. GEO optimization targets AI-generated responses in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. The signals overlap - domain authority, content quality, and technical health matter for both - but GEO adds structured data, direct-answer content, and AI crawler access as critical factors.
