Does My Med Spa Appear in Perplexity?

Most med spas don't — even ones with strong Google rankings. Here's how to check in 30 seconds, why you're probably missing, and exactly what to fix.

Quick answer Go to Perplexity.ai and search "Botox med spa [your city]" or "fillers clinic [your city]". If your practice name doesn't appear in the answer or sources, you're invisible. The four reasons this happens — and all four fixes — are below.

How to check right now (30 seconds)

1

Open Perplexity.ai

Go to perplexity.ai in a fresh browser tab. Make sure you're not logged in — you want to see what patients see, not a personalized result.

2

Search for your treatment + city

Try these exact queries (replace with your city):
· "Botox med spa [city]"
· "fillers clinic near [city]"
· "hormone therapy med spa [city]"
· "semaglutide clinic [city]"

3

Check the answer and sources

Perplexity shows a written answer and a list of cited sources. Look for your practice name in both. If you don't see it in either place — you're not being cited.

✓ If you appear Your core signals are working. Check which queries cite you vs. which don't — there are probably treatment or city combinations where competitors appear instead of you.
✗ If you don't appear You have at least one of the four gaps below. All four are fixable within a week without a developer.

Why your med spa isn't showing up

Gap 1: PerplexityBot is blocked in your robots.txt

Perplexity crawls websites with its own bot called PerplexityBot. If your robots.txt file blocks it — either explicitly or through a blanket disallow — Perplexity cannot read any of your pages. Check yours at yourdomain.com/robots.txt. You need this:

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Google-Extended
Allow: /

40-50% of med spas block at least one AI crawler. It's the fastest fix and shows results the quickest.

Gap 2: No FAQPage schema on treatment pages

FAQPage schema tells Perplexity exactly where the questions and answers are on your page — in machine-readable JSON. Without it, Perplexity has to guess what's an answer and what's marketing copy. Pages with FAQPage schema make their Q&A content directly extractable by Perplexity — yet only 2% of the 50 US practices we audited had it in place (AltorLab GEO Readiness Benchmark 2026).

You need it on your Botox page, fillers page, hormone therapy page, semaglutide page, and any other treatment page that patients ask Perplexity about. Each schema block needs 4-6 real patient questions with direct answers.

Gap 3: Treatment pages open with brand copy, not answers

Perplexity extracts answers from the first 100-150 words of a page. If your Botox page opens with "At [Practice Name], we believe every patient deserves to look and feel their best..." — that's brand copy. Perplexity skips it.

Rewrite the first paragraph of each treatment page to answer the most common patient question directly. For a Botox page: "Botox at [Practice Name] costs $12-$15 per unit. A typical forehead treatment uses 20-30 units and takes 15 minutes. Results last 3-4 months." That's extractable. The brand paragraph can come second.

Gap 4: Your entity is inconsistent across the web

Perplexity cross-checks your business identity across multiple sources before citing you. If your practice name on your website is "Glow Med Spa" but your Google Business Profile says "Glow Medical Spa & Wellness" and your RealSelf listing says "Glow Spa" — Perplexity treats these as potentially different businesses and doesn't confidently cite any of them.

Make your practice name, address, phone number, and service list identical across your website, Google Business Profile, RealSelf, Yelp, and Healthgrades. This is the slowest fix to take effect (6-8 weeks) but the most durable.

How long until you appear after fixing these

Perplexity recrawls frequently. Most med spas see first citations within 2-4 weeks after completing all four fixes — usually starting with lower-competition queries like "hormone therapy clinic [city]" or "semaglutide med spa [city]" before the more competitive "Botox [city]" queries.

The fastest path: fix the robots.txt and FAQPage schema first (both take a few hours). Rewrite the treatment page intros next. Entity cleanup last, since directory changes propagate slowly.

Frequently asked questions

Does my med spa appear in Perplexity?

Search "Botox med spa [your city]" at perplexity.ai. If your practice name isn't in the answer or citations, you're not being cited. The four fixes above are why — and all are fixable within a week.

Why is my med spa not showing in Perplexity?

The four most common causes: PerplexityBot blocked in robots.txt, no FAQPage schema on treatment pages, treatment pages opening with brand copy instead of direct answers, and inconsistent business name/address across directories. Most med spas have at least two of these gaps.

How do I get my med spa to appear in Perplexity?

Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt, add FAQPage schema to treatment pages, rewrite treatment page intros to lead with direct answers, and make your entity consistent across GBP, RealSelf, Yelp, and Healthgrades. First citations typically appear within 2-4 weeks.

Does Perplexity visibility affect Google rankings?

The fixes that help Perplexity — FAQPage schema, direct-answer content, entity consistency — also improve Google rankings and Google AI Overview visibility. They are the same underlying signals.

Is this different from Google AI Overviews?

Yes — Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are separate systems with different crawlers and citation logic. A med spa can appear in one and not the other. The fixes above help both, but the degree to which each platform responds varies. Our audit checks all three: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

What is an AI visibility score for a med spa?

An AI visibility score (also called a GEO Health Score) rates how well your med spa's website is configured to be cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. It scores five signals on a 0-100 scale: AI crawler access in robots.txt (15 pts), FAQPage schema on treatment pages (25 pts), answer-first content structure (20 pts), entity consistency across your website and directories (20 pts), and directory presence on Healthgrades, RealSelf, and Yelp (20 pts). The average US med spa scores 41/100 before any fixes. → Check your AI visibility score free — no login needed

How do I check med spa AI overview visibility?

For Perplexity: search "Botox med spa [city]" at perplexity.ai and check if your practice appears in the answer or sources. For Google AI Overviews: search the same query in Google and look for the blue AI Overview box — your practice should appear in the cited sources panel. For ChatGPT: search "best med spa for Botox in [city]" and check if your name appears. If you're invisible in all three, the four gaps on this page explain why. The free audit runs all 10 prompts and sends you screenshots within 48 hours.
